Unit 10

 Strengths & Weaknesses

Over the time I have been at college I have been able to develop skills and also identity areas of improvement. For example on of my strengths would be improvisation and being able to think quickly on the spot. I feel I have enough will to freely experiment with characters and are helping and supportive to others. I can defiantly be a good leader when I can I as I can listen to others and safely lead a team. Over time my stage craft has defiantly improved, better diction, projection and blocking which has all helped enhance my performances. With that I do have some weaknesses which I have been lucky enough to identify and are trying to improve on them. Coming into college I hadn't worked with other people like I had before so it was a challenge to fit in and try creating pieces with others. I do think I can take more initiative with being in charge as I should utilise my leadership skills more. Even though my stage craft has improved my volume does drop off at emotional moments, I definitely need to find these moments and improve on them. I need to stretch myself with more production roles as I have only really done stage management.

Personal Statement

I know my goal for this next chapter is to simply being the best performer i can be and by training on a course such as yours. I discovered the joy of performing at an early age. I see this as my greatest passion, and I am fully invested in following my dream. I am particularly interested in screen acting and I know this is my future goal. Whilst my interest lies more with screen, I still have a passion for stage, and I would still want to test myself with it.

Following an open audition, I did for the Northern Stage, in Newcastle, I quickly gained representation from Janet Plater Management.  At the age of 17, this shows my commitment to the craft of performing and has given me a head start, I have already succeeded in my first professional acting job with Theatre Space Northeast performing Julius Caesar. And through my studies at my college, I have had the opportunity to perform in several professional theatre spaces, one of which was the prestigious National Theatre in London on the Dorfman stage as part of Connections, as well as York Theatre Royal.  Looking ahead our college acting company is also heading to perform at the Newcastle Theatre Royal for Connections soon. Other theatres include Stockton Globe and Stockton Arc where I have performed in leading roles. I pushed myself to test my craft with many varied roles to become a more well-rounded performer.  For example, I played the leading role at the Stockton arc, which was my first jump into professional theatre, leading peter pan in such a larger scale was yet another big stretch. I have played other main roles that have stretched my abilities, I was able to switch from a musical performance of peter pan with singing and dancing to an iconic Billy Bibbit from one flew over the cuckoo's nest. This was an instance emotional drama that stretched me even more on stage. I have delved into immersive theatre with a piece I performed in the Stockton Globe, breaking the fourth wall and forcing me to improvise. I have had many other leading roles such as the artful dodger which tested my physicality and wit, Bugsy Melone that tested my vocal range with accents and Bert from Mary Poppins to highlight onstage presence. I have flipped form peter pan to Sweeny Todd in a showpiece in Stockton Globe delving into villains and becoming a more well-rounded actor

I have also had the opportunity to have a lot of experience with film as I starred in the lead role in our college feature film as well as a leading role in a student-led short film. Most excitingly after meeting Ken loach at my secondary school, I was given a call back from him for a role in The Old Oak, I then starred as an extra in the film on a professional set. All of this has allowed me to further hone my acting abilities like improvisation, character development, experimentation and most importantly how to work in a team and to collaborate and support. I have experience in singing, dancing, stage combat and producing and directing. I also took on the role as stage manager at the Stockton arc in Peter Pan.

I have many interests outside of college, one of my favourites is cooking and experimenting with food. Catering is another passion of mine alongside acting. I enjoy socializing and mixing with new people, I am welcoming and strive to make friends along with enjoying time with family. I have always loved films and now as a performer I admire and value them differently with make me even more passionate about them. During secondary school I gained a bronze award for The Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

I want the opportunity to study, to learn and to develop on this course in the hopes this will get me more in touch with this industry, to open new opportunities and to carry on my acting journey into the future. I am looking forward to making new connections personally as well as professionally and rising to further challenges. Along with this, studying on your course away from home will truly develop skills for life including confidence, resilience and motivation which are all abilities necessary for this industry.

Universities

Which Uni/Route?

Why did you apply here?

What does the course give you?

Have you been successful?

 RADA

This was a really challenge I wanted to set myself, its a very prestigious school that I felt like I just had to give a go. Its very highly regarded and would of been amazing to had gone any further.

This courses gives you a BA hons degree. Their rigorous training does not fall short and the credentials of having been to RADA certainly don't go unnoticed. A lot of focus is spent on voice and they do a lot of public performances.

 rejected first round

 Bristol Old Vic

This drama school was the most appealing to me, not only is it on the same level as RARA in terms of its reputation but is much more relaxed and overall looks more appealing.

This course also offers a BA hons degree. There is a very wide range of skills that Bristol focus on with a good eye for screen, this excites me as that is my main goal. It does do a lot of ensemble work which is great for team work.

Rejected first round before the course was cancelled

 Royal Welsh College of Music&Drama

on my list this school came second in terms of most appealing. This school was highly recommended to me and more desirable as it is in wales (possibly meaning its less likely to get cancelled).

this is also offers a BA Hons degree. Tis course offers very high quality facilities to even further boost any acting skills. Avery hands on approach to learning which and also a focus on production.

 Rejected first round

 Level 4

even though unis didn't go my way this year this option does not feel like a last resort. Its giving me another chance to even further stretch myself, give myself more experience before applying again to uni all while being older which is more desirable for unis.

This course offers more UCAS points, more experience and another qualification. This extra year of college prepares you for uni essentially.

Monologues

Anton Chekhov's Vanya - Ivan/Michael
William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream - Lysander
Orchestra by Charlie Josephine - Trumpet #1

I will be evaluation my dramatic contemporary monologue, skip to 0:50 to 2:22 - https://youtu.be/ZppjnOgLtyo

I believe I chose a very good dramatic monologue, there is a clear range of emotion which is hard to capture sometimes without it being just one tone all the way through, I believe I made it interesting enough in my emotion to keep people watching. I don’t think I thought hard enough about where I need to pause to create more impact so the pacing can definitely be better. I also need to be more focused on showing my emotions early on my face so I need to stop moving my head around (also having my hair cut before I taped it would have been nice) overall I am happy to an extent with it but it could be so much better. However I understood the text and are content with the direction I took it in.
