The Ghost Light Tours - Evaluation
This years ghost light tours was a brilliant experience which even further developed my craft in immersive and promenade theatre. Its a whole different type of theatre which can place you under a lot of pressure, I feel now this time round that my skills are more finely tuned with quick thinking and being able to command the audience. I also feel I stretched myself with a villain role in one of the casts by playing Sweeney Todd. I also played another recurring character in the second cast called "the mad director" which was alto like my previous character I played last year called Jonny walker.
Me as Sweeny Todd with Mr Lovett
The experience
I can see a really improvement from last year so I'm glad I took the effort to stretch myself in new areas. When I entered the space I felt like I had more presence and I brought more to the piece, just over all more comfortable. We spent less time rehearsing this year as there was a tighter schedule however the rehearsals went very smoothly, it feels like having experienced this before I know what I need to work on an how it all gets put together. I had more to dig my teeth into this year playing two characters, this meant I had twice the amount of developing to do. It felt much more fluent this time as well as having more confidence to direct the audience. As Sweeney Todd I had my own space with Lily RV who played Mrs Lovett, this gave us some freedom to play around in the space and become completely immersed in the environment. It was great to play a duo to as we really had to get the characters chemistry right
As the mad director, I was a recurring character in the tour, popping in and out of sight with smaller pieces. This was very similar to my role last year however this time my character is much more intimidation, violent and as you guessed "mad". This character being fictional gave me a chance to have a lot of creative freedom however I was told to play it more angry. Jumping from space to space is very exiting especially when I get the chance to perform in the more scary environments such as the clown area. It was great to stretch myself again with another role that could throw a curve ball at any time.
what have I improved on?
I feel like I have very much improved on character development this time round from playing Sweeney Todd. Even though it was a smaller role it taught me way more than the mad director. becoming this villain proved very hard, it was the fact he was such a cynical man, very chilling and quiet that I just couldn't get right, he is always thinking and planning even though he is blinded by revenge. This year the ghost light tour proved more of a challenge than last year which proves I am heading in the right direction.
